Capture crystal-clear audio in even the most challenging environments with the Sennheiser MKH 416-P48U3 shotgun microphone, a trusted tool for professionals in film production, television, and field recording. Known for its moisture resistance, sharp directivity, and mix-ready sound, this mic is built to deliver reliable performance whether you're on set, in the studio, or outdoors.
The MKH 416 is engineered to perform flawlessly in demanding conditions. With no onboard controls to manage and a rugged, moisture-resistant RF condenser design, it's ideal for high-pressure situations where you need dependable, no-compromise audio capture. Whether you're filming a feature, conducting interviews, or gathering field sound, the MKH 416 delivers consistent results you can count on.
This microphone features a hypercardioid pickup pattern at low to midrange frequencies, transitioning to a lobar pattern at higher frequencies. This design significantly reduces off-axis sound, particularly between 125 Hz and 2 kHz, by about 10 dB at 90 degrees, allowing you to isolate voices or sound effects with precision.
Its wide 40 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response includes a subtle rise between 5 and 15 kHz for enhanced speech intelligibility, along with a natural bass roll-off that helps eliminate rumble and boominess in untreated environments.
With a low self-noise level of just 13 dBA and a high sensitivity of -32 dB, the MKH 416 is capable of delivering clean, dynamic recordings without the need for aggressive post-processing. This makes it especially useful for recording dialogue, foley, and ambient sounds in both controlled and unpredictable settings.
The MKH 416’s RF condenser technology makes it highly resistant to humidity and condensation, two common challenges in location sound recording. Whether you're working in a humid climate, near water, or dealing with fast-changing weather, this microphone remains stable and reliable where other mics might fail.
Designed for compatibility with a wide range of equipment, the MKH 416 operates on standard 48V phantom power (supports 44–52 VDC) and features a transformerless, balanced 3-pin XLR output. This allows direct connection to field recorders, mixers, DSLR audio adapters, and the built-in preamps of camcorders and cinema cameras, ensuring optimal signal integrity throughout your workflow.
The MKH 416’s lightweight metal body comes in a matte black finish to reduce reflections on camera. It mounts easily to a stand or boompole using the included MZQ 100 mic clip. For added shock protection and ergonomic control during handheld operation, pair it with the Sennheiser MZS 20-1 shockmount and grip system (available separately).
Included with the MKH 416 is a foam windscreen, which helps reduce wind and HVAC noise by up to 20–25 dB in light breezes and indoor environments. For shooting in windier or more unpredictable conditions, consider adding the Sennheiser MZH 60-1 furry windshield (sold separately) for even greater wind noise suppression.
